It is not a feeling of melancholia but more of a bittersweet sentimentality for what once was. Nostalgia has been widely used to describe many notations but has Just recently been modified to describe a positive experience. The word nostalgia was first coined in the 17th century. The term was used to describe the medical conditions of Swiss mercenaries who longed to return home. Nostalgia soon became a name for a disease who’s symptoms included fainting, high fever, stomach pain, and even death. By the late 19th century nostalgia was discarded as a medical condition and recognized as a form of melancholia and a mentally repressive disorder. Now nostalgia has a positive meaning. It Is classified as the term to describe the exact feeling felt when thinking of past memories. Nostalgia does have a positive effect on an individual. The Oxford English Dictionary defines nostalgia as sentimental longing for a period of the past. Merriam- Webster Dictionary says is it pleasure and sadness that is caused by remembering something from the past and wishing that you could experience it again. The most common synonyms used when referring to nostalgia are sentimentality and yearning. The important things about these definitions are the positive tones they all have. Many people have experienced nostalgia at some point in their life, whether that be a nod memory from childhood or a strong feeling of homesickness. Many of these happy memories even trigger an euphoric feeling that takes you back to that certain place or time. These overall feelings provide a sense of comfort when life gets difficult. Young adults find that reminiscing on past memories has helped them smoothly transition into major life changes such as moving away from home. Nostalgia has been proven to counteract boredom, anxiety, and even loneliness. When things are especially difficult in different aspects of my life I find that I begin to feel lonely. Loneliness has always been a horrible feeling to cope with because there is nothing more helpless than feeling like you don’t have anyone. With that loneliness I start to question the continuity of my life. Why am I not friends with that person anymore? What am I supposed to be doing with my life? At this point in my life everything Is changing and there isn’t a stable thing that roots me to reality except for my memories. On the days that I feel anxiety or loneliness I always think of a certain memory that brings me back to a happier time. The memory Is always the same, but I can feel It better than I remember It. I remember the way the alarm feels a room window and noticing how the sun isn’t quite as high as it normally is. I remember the exact smell of the cinnamon candle that my mom starts burning every fall. This memory has no actual significance but somehow it gets rid of all the loneliness I feel and makes me feel continuity and optimism instead. Nostalgia itself does not involve any feelings of melancholia. The literal act of nostalgia is to recall a memory that is fond to you in some way. The purpose of remembering past memories is to relate them to now to provide the sense of nonentity that you need to maintain a comforting balance when life changes.. Peace in the Middle East free essay sample

The â€Å"process† of bringing peace to the Middle East has never been easy. The creation of Israel since 1948 has spurred conflicts and given rise to wars and many disputes throughout the world. It is an issue that has been worked upon through many decades but to no avail. Palestine and Arab nations can’t cooperate with Israel’s ‘all or nothing’ attitude which has resulted in the killings of many innocent people and the abolition of the basic human rights for Palestinians. Peace in the Middle East is an issue of utmost importance for not just the people residing in those areas but for the world as a whole. It poses a threat to the stability around the globe and poses a question to the basic human rights that are violated in the ever-lasting war between the different regions of the Middle-East namely Palestine and Israel. According to Jimmy Carter’s book ‘Palestine Peace Not Apartheid’ Palestinians in the occupied regions are not allowed to â€Å"assemble peacefully, travel without restrictions, or own property without the fear of its being confiscated by a multitude of legal ruses†. We will write a custom essay sample on Peace in the Middle East or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Having to see this kind of situation, we ask ourselves the purpose of our existence and question our own morals and values. Constant war has led to a lot of immigration of Palestinians and Israelis to the United States. Although immigration does have its benefits, but since the number of immigrants is more than what the country can currently offer, it has caused more competition for job opportunities and lessening of the standards of living within the United States. Although this might be happening on a smaller scale when considering the broader picture but it is contributing to the failure of the economy even more. Some people also argue that United States is spending a lot of dollars on Israel that might just as well be invested somewhere else is also of a concern. Annually, according to some websites we give out over a billion dollars of tax money to support Israel. This money could be put into our education system, health care system or could be used to decrease the United Sta tes’ debts. By investing this money for the general public, middle class people could be relieved of many taxes that they have to pay. Also, by doing this we would be creating a brighter future for the young generation who don’t attend schools because of financial problems. Issue of Palestine is also important based on the economic prospect of the world. If the relationships between Palestine and Israel further deteriorates, or any of the Muslim countries try to attack Israel or if Israel attacks any neighboring country the oil trade can get affected by this. Foreign countries that invest or are looking to invest in these countries for oil drilling projects may not do so because of safety issues. So I believe one of the most important benefit peace can bring is the establishment of greater trade opportunities. Thus, meaning that there might be a reduction in the prices of oil and gas which would profit ordinary citizens and also help establish more industries or busin esses. The ongoing war between Palestine and Israel is the reason that so many Palestinians are unemployed. It is the reason for so many uneducated Palestinian children. And it is the cause for immigration of Palestinians to the neighboring countries where they are mainly treated as second class citizens. All of this is widening the gap between the different regions of the world. Some parts of the world are forced into poverty and illiteracy while other parts of the world enjoy the best of the opportunities that life has to offer. Corruption, theft and other criminal activities rise when the government is shaky and people are living in horrendous circumstances. Innocent people become victims of such social ills of the society and respect for one another or the values and morals are forgotten. When the media portrays this on television or internet people learn to get used to it and slowly it changes the mindset of the people who later use the same techniques when put under similar co nditions. Thus, hatred and violence become the answer to the troubles that people might be facing. Also, by portraying war in the Middle East like the media does, people who have little or no knowledge began to stereotype and hit specific groups with racist comments. It affects me as a Muslim when I am told that terrorist organizations such as Hamas are attacking the Israel. People see just one side of a picture and it gets hard for me to depict and analyze what I think. Lastly the current situation in Middle East affects me because I am a human being. It is heart breaking to see other human beings face starvation, violence and oppression. But it is even more heart breaking to know for a fact that the situation is going to remain the same if this â€Å"all or nothing† attitude remains. Both Israel and Palestine need to reach compromises to achieve peace in the holy land, peace in the Middle East and peace all over the world. Peace.

Examining the International Sy essays

Examining the International Sy essays In The Anarchical Society, Hedley Bull concludes that the international system is best understood as his theorized international society. Yet while he substantiates his argument with a plethora of historical examples and the fallacies of earlier presumptions, his analysis fails to address the roles of the largely undeveloped, destitute nations and relies nearly entirely on what he perceives as the goals of interstate relationships. Through a careful investigation of the core motives that drive state action, international anarchy not Bulls international society emerges as the most viable portrait of the international system. According to the argument Hedley Bull develops in the earlier part of The Anarchical Society, security against violence, observance of agreements, and stability of property are the three elementary, primary, and universal goals of society. Order and international order are then understood as a recurrent pattern of human conduct that preserves these goals of social life (Bull, 4-7). For Bull, states are the collective agents charged with the protection and furtherance of the interests of their population and its values, and the key ingredient for world peace (Bull, 8, 13, 17). He perceives an international society as the expression of international order, as it constitutes a society of states and is a possible result for any group of states that shares coherent goals. An international society then forms a system in the sense that the behaviour of each of the states is a necessary factor in the perception and analysis of the others, and the states are expected to perform cert ain duties beyond their narrow scope of self-interest. While Bull certainly appears to present a convincing and logical thesis, his argument draws glaring concerns. First, his three goals of society are merely goals that are cherished by those who are satisfied with the existing scheme of the world...

Book Report About Oliver Twist English Literature Essay

Book Report About Oliver Twist English Literature Essay The title of the book is very easy to explain. It called Oliver Twist because it tells the life story of Oliver. Further reveals the title that the book goes about a certain person called Oliver Twist. However a link from the title to the theme is hard to find in first stand. After reading the book you can link the title to the theme. Setting The book Oliver Twist was written in the  Victorian period(1838). The story took place at the time that their where a lot of social problems in England. (19th century) The social problems are relevant for understanding the story. And his development of the plot. I give you underneath a few examples: The characteristics found in the book: – In the book is a big difference between social classes. The rich people are more important and have more power than the poor people. The high social class looks down on the low class.   For example: when Nancy comes into Rose Maylies house, the people there are disgusted of Nancy and they donâ€⠄¢t trust her, because she’s poor and filthy. Also, because Oliver Twist is an orphan and has no money, his future is already determined. He has to live in poverty and work in a workhouse and he can’t do things he likes. The society actually determines everything.   – Men are superior to women. Men think women only have a couple of purposes. Women can’t have an opinion. In the book, Nancy does everything the men say she has to do, she obeys them. The men look down upon women. So the poor women are the most discriminated. There is a patriarchal society. –  An intrusive author. Charles Dickens sometimes ‘talks’ to you in the book, tells a bit of the story and comments.   – The setting is realistic and reflects feelings. In the poor neighborhood, there’s almost always rain and mud and dirt but when Oliver Twist is with Rose Maylie, the sun shines and everything seems beautiful and right(because he’s happy). Summ ary Oliver Twist is born in a workhouse. Oliver’s mother died when she was giving birth to him so he became an orphan. Oliver spends the first nine years of his life in the orphanage. In the orphanage, they gave him the name Oliver Twist. One day Oliver is sent by Mr. Bumble(a horrible man) to a coffin maker. There he also wasn’t treated well and so he ran away to London. In London he met Nancy, Fagin and Bill Sikes. Bill and Fagin wanted to make a criminal out of Oliver. One day Oliver had to break into a large house with Sikes. They got caught. Bill Sikes and his helper had the chance to ran away. But Oliver who was shot got back to the large house. Rose Maylie took care of him. Meanwhile, Nancy learned about Oliver’s past. She went to Mr. Brownlow (a nice man who had taken care of Oliver before) and Rose to tell them about Oliver’s history. It turned out that Oliver’s identity was found. He had a half-brother with the name Monks. He was a crimin al. Monks didn’t want anyone to know that Oliver and He where half-brothers, because otherwise he needed to share the inherited money. Meanwhile, Fagin found out that Nancy had helped Oliver and that she had told everything to Rose and Mr. Brownlow. For that Nancy got killed by her own lover Bill Sikes. After killing Nancy Bill Sikes ran away. The rest of the bad guys and Fagin got caught. Eventually Oliver was adopted by Mr. Brownlow and they bought a house close to Rose.

Personal Statement for MSc Finance application Essay

Personal Statement for MSc Finance application - Essay Example My interest in the field of finance is of dual nature; I not only enjoy working out the objective aspect, i.e. the calculations and analysis of financial data but am also drawn to the beauty of its application phase. I am fascinated by the way accounting principles when applied benefit a business task and enhances it in all respects. I see the process of running a business or industry like solving a jigsaw puzzle, with four components; the accounts piece, the financing piece, the marketing piece and the management piece. They are all part of one, bigger scheme. I find beauty and joy in compiling all these components; and feel a strong sense of fulfilment when these pieces are fully combined to give an enhanced end product- the complete picture. During my internships and other work experience, I have had the chance to taste different business related aspects: I have gained some experience in marketing, accounts, management and financial analysis. All these experiences have led me to b elieve that finance is the area that is of greater interest to me, since foundations of any business are embedded in its finance department. If there is capital and strong financial analysis the shortcomings can be pinpointed and management can then be moulded so as to yield desired results. I have been an academically above average student throughout my studies and have participated in various co curricular activities at school and college level. Being a person who is gifted in leadership qualities, I have led various fund raising campaigns during my college years. One of my note-worthy participatory activities in this regard is that of the fund raising campaign for members of student’s career development association. This was led by me and with assistance of other members of the society; we managed to raise more funds than the target sum. As a student, I have had some opportunities (though limited) to practically apply the theory being taught. In doing so I felt a need to h ave more command over the financing element which is why I have chosen to attain a post graduate degree in finance. Here is an incident form my life which I would like to share: When I was working as an internee with the marketing department at ‘New Thought’ in China, I was assigned the task of conducting some primary and secondary research in order to assist the business partners in determining the best strategy to achieve their goals. While I was gathering and analysing this data, I realized that even the marketing side is dependent on the accounting principles. What I did was to identify the gaps in information based on accounting and finance and recommended them to incorporate finances based marketing strategies into their existing marketing strategies. This incident further strengthened my aspirations to attain a post graduate degree in finance. I learnt that finance background gives a person the power to better understand business dynamics and places the person in a better position to solve other business related issues including management and even marketing. I also have a deep interest in the world economy and have attained ample knowledge about the stake-hold share market. I believe that raising capital is an art; an enjoyable but complicated task to do; and one needs to have sound knowledge of finance in order to do so. Accounting provides investors and businessmen with multiple techniques to manage record and communicate
